National Basketball Heritage Centre

The National Basketball Heritage Centre (NBHC) was founded at the University of Worcester in 2015. It was initiated by major donations of historical basketball material from John Atkinson and Jenny Collins. It has since been recognised as the central repository for basketball history related material by the sport’s national governing bodies in the United Kingdom. The National Basketball Library, the National Basketball Archive and the National Basketball Studies Centre form the NBHC.

The National Basketball Library

The National Basketball Library located within The Hive houses the biggest public collection of basketball literature in the United Kingdom. It includes:

  • Dedicated sections to basketball coaching and basketball history
  • An extensive back catalogue of periodicals such as Basketball, Basketball Monthly, FIBA Monthly, Slam, Slam Dunk, and MVP
  • The NBHC’s impressive collection of matchday programs, newsletters, press clippings, media guides, yearbooks, and basketball handbooks

The National Basketball Archive

The National Basketball Archive is based at the University of Worcester’s St. John’s campus. It includes:

  • Score sheets and box score statistics for thousands of domestic and national team matches. The score sheets go back as far as the 1940s for national team competition, and the 1970s for domestic league and cup competitions
  • Extensive documentation around the development of notational and statistical systems by John Atkinson, Roger Yapp, and others
  • Memorabilia such as team photographs, game used uniforms & equipment, trophies, medals, pennants, and pins

The National Basketball Studies Centre

The National Basketball Studies Centre at the University of Worcester was established to encourage research and academic enquiry into the history and social impact of basketball in the United Kingdom. The centre currently accommodates two fully funded PhD students:

  • A full-time PhD studentship in partnership with University of Central Lancashire, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Sporting Heritage
  • And a part-time PhD studentship funded by the University of Worcester

Contributors

In 2015, John Atkinson and Jenny Collins began the collection with a wealth of statistical data, as well as yearbooks, match programmes, magazines and other memorabilia. The collection has since grown though other generous deposits, both large and small. We are grateful to all those who have enriched the collections.

Matchday programmes

The collection of matchday programmes in the National Basketball Library covers domestic and international matches at the junior and senior levels with the earliest examples dating from the 1940s. Currently there are over 1,200 programmes in the collection, comprising:

  • Domestic League, trophy, and cup matches
  • Domestic championship finals
  • International club competitions
  • Men’s and women’s national team matches
  • Junior national team matches
  • University matches (domestic and international)
  • School competitions
  • All-star games
  • Miscellaneous

Handbooks and media guides

The National Basketball Library holds a range of yearbooks, handbooks, and media guides covering the UK, Europe, and the USA. Some of the principle UK titles in the collection include:

  • ABBA / EBBA Handbook (1959-1964)
  • EBBA / EB English Basketball Leagues Handbook (1961-2010)
  • BL / BBL Handbook (1993-2002)
  • ESBBA English Schools Basketball Association Handbook (1961-2006)

Magazines

The National Basketball Library houses a growing collection of basketball magazines covering the UK, Europe, and the USA and includes some fanzines. Currently around 60 English language titles are held in the collection, including:

  • Basketball / Basketball Monthly (1960-1989)
  • Pawprint (1976-1992)
  • FIBA Basketball Monthly (1992-1999)
  • Slam Dunk (1994-1998)
  • MVP (2011-2015)
  • Zone Press (1990-2003)

The collection also holds a small number of foreign language titles, mainly Spanish and French.

Newspaper clippings

The National Basketball Library contains an extensive range of newspaper clippings relating to local, national, and international basketball. Though most of the clippings are in English there are some, relating to international basketball and the Olympics, that are foreign language. Some of these clippings chart the progress of certain local teams throughout various basketball seasons. They cover many topics such as youth and education, women’s basketball, sponsorship and commercialism in sport, and the Olympics.

Score sheets and statistics

The National Basketball Archive houses score sheets and statistics for thousands of domestic and national matches. The collection includes men’s and women’s games from junior and senior competitions. The score sheets go back as far as the 1940s for the national teams and the early 1970s for the domestic leagues.

Using this statistical material alongside sources such as yearbooks and matchday programmes held in the National Basketball Archive, the NBHC has begun compiling a definitive statistical history of the sport at national team level, starting with the Great Britain Men's National Team.

GB National Men's Team - International Caps

British Basketball Federation criteria for an International Cap:

“To earn a cap, a player must be on the official score sheet of a senior international game. A senior international game is defined as any contest between two senior national first teams that is played according to official FIBA rules. The game may be played in front of an audience or behind closed doors but must be played for the regular duration of 40 minutes and played over four quarters with overtime periods only being played if the score is tied at the end of regulation. Games that do not meet these criteria are referred to as scrimmages and are not eligible for international caps. A player receiving a DNP in an international game still receives an international cap so long as they were dressed in game attire, were available to play, and were on the official score sheet.”

Notational analysis

The National Basketball Archive holds extensive documentation around the development of notational analysis and statistical reporting systems by John Atkinson, Roger Yapp and others. These often relate directly to statistic sheets and can be used to chart the progress of a team through a season or the development of notational reporting itself.

Memorabilia

The National Basketball Heritage Centre houses a significant collection of basketball memorabilia. The collection includes:

  • Game used uniforms
  • Game used equipment
  • Team photographs, action photographs, medals, trophies, pennants and posters
  • Domestic, international, and national team memorabilia
