Borrow books at the self-issue machines in The Hive, using your student ID card.  Always take a receipt as this is your notification of when your items are due back.

Renewals can be made via your library account, in person at The Hive or any county library.  You will be sent an email reminder two days before your items are due back, however it is your responsibility to remember to return or renew books on time.
*Currently branch libraries (i.e. not The Hive) are not able to renew high demand books, however if you ask them to allow you to log into the student portal on their terminals you can renew in branch from there

Unless a book is reserved you can renew it up to 99 times. University Short Loan items cannot be renewed.

Please check your university email regularly as this is our main way of contacting you.

Access your library account online

In your library account you can renew and reserve books, see your loan history and any charges.

Reserving items

If a book is on loan to someone else and you want to borrow it you can make a reservation via your library account. University members can have a maximum of 5 reservations at any one time.  If you are looking for an item we do not hold, please contact Inter-Library Requests.

University High Demand books (blue labels) cannot be reserved if there is a copy available on the shelves.  Short loan books (orange labels) cannot be reserved.

Three week loan reservations can be collected from any branch library, University High Demand loan reservations can only be collected from The Hive.

You will receive an email to your university account telling you when the item is available for collection.  We will give you seven days to collect your book(s) before returning them to the main shelves.

Reservations are collected from Level One and are shelved in alphabetical order by borrower surname.

Overdues, fines and charges

See the allocations guide for details of fines.  In the unfortunate event of your fines reaching £11 your account will be blocked.  This means you will be unable to borrow any further items until the fines are paid. You can pay fines in a number of ways.

  • If you have lost an item, or your book is more than 90 days overdue you will be charged a replacement fee of £25 for standard items.  There may be an additional charge for other items. We cannot accept replacement copies of lost items.
  • If you think an item is on your record incorrectly please let us know as soon as possible. If the item has not turned up after 6 weekly checks the replacement charge will be added to your library account.
  • If you do have an issue with fines or lost items please contact us as soon as possible.
  • Please check your university email regularly as this is our main way of contacting you.

Our procedures are based on the Library Regulations.

Worcester County Library procedures will apply where a County Library item is lost, damaged or very overdue while on your account.

Printing and copying

To add credit to your student ID card, either use the top-up kiosks located at St Johns Campus, City Campus or The Hive, or alternatively you can use a credit or debit card via the uPrint link on your Student Portal. Further information on computers, wifi and wifi printing is available.  Please see our copyright guidance information if you are printing or copying from a resource, including books and journals.

Printing and copying charges are as follows:

  • Mono: 5p per A4 sheet and 10p per A3 sheet.
  • Colour 25p per A4 sheet and 50p per A3 sheet.

In The Hive there are colour printers and photocopiers on levels 0, 1, 2 and 3.

Eresource access

Use Library Search to access our online resources, including articles and ebooks.

Using other university libraries

The University is a member of the SCONUL Access scheme which allows students and staff to visit and borrow from other academic libraries in the UK.  Undergraduates have reference only access.  Staff, postgraduates, part time and distance learning students have borrowing rights where the institution allows.

Applications are made online at SCONUL’s website.  You should receive a response to your application within two working days.

Planning your visit

  • Before you go, check the website of the library you want to visit for their opening hours and other requirements to visit.
  • Take a copy of your acceptance e-mail and your University of Worcester ID card.
  • When you get there, you will be issued with a library card.
  • Membership can be valid for up to three years or until your course or contract ends if earlier. Remember, in your application you have agreed to follow the rules and regulations of the libraries you visit so find out what these are.

Access to online resources is not usually permitted, however, if you want to access the University of Worcester's online resources from another university you'll be able to do that, via your own device provided the university you visit is part of the Eduroam network.

Using Worcestershire County Council Libraries

A list of branches and opening times can be found here.

Please note the following points about using the county's public libraries:

  • University High Demand books cannot by renewed by staff on their systems, however if you wish to renew in branch ask a staff member to allow you to access your account via the student portal on one of their terminals (ensure you've logged out of your account when you've finished).
  • When making reservations you can select to collect 3 week loans from any branch from a drop menu.  University High Demand books can only be collected from The Hive, the drop down menu will reflect this, however they can be returned to any county branch.
  • Short loan items cannot be returned to branch libraries, see the chart at the top of this page.
