An ORCiD iD is a unique digital identifier. It belongs to you throughout your scholarly career.  An ORCiD iD is free, with registration taking less than 5 minutes.

Why do I need an ORCiD iD?ORCID logo

An ORCiD iD will:

  • Bring all your research publications together in one place
  • Distinguish you from other researchers, avoid name confusion and ensure you claim all your research outputs
  • Help promote your research and share information about your research activities

Increasingly, funding organisations and publishers are mandating ORCiD iDs. They are strongly recommended for staff who will be submitting to the REF.

How do I get an ORCiD id?

Registering for an ORCiD iD takes less than 5 minutes:

  • Go to the ORCiD website and add in a few details about yourself
  • Add multiple email addresses to your ORCiD record to secure your access in the future.

Is ORCiD just another online profile site?

No. ORCiD provides a universal, non-proprietary identification number. The ORCiD (Open Researcher & Contributor IDentifier) registry is managed by ORCiD (Inc.), a not-for-profit organisation formed in 2010. It is a global, not-for-profit organization sustained by fees from ORCiD member organizations.

Information kept by ORCiD is protected by their privacy policy, which is designed to comply with US 'Safe Harbor' principles. The ORCiD web services are also TRUSTe certified.

Some researchers find it useful to add information about themselves and their research. You can add an optional brief biography, and keywords or phrases to describe your research activities. You get the benefits of an ORCiD iD even if you chose to enter minimal profile details.
